memory in dwelling, 2000
(Created with Richard Hecht)
The installation for Holocaust Memorial Day was created in an abandoned handball court with worn and scarred walls that extend 20 feet toward the sky. The opening overhead is covered in chain link giving the viewer the feeling of confinement while also offering escape or transcendence through a view of the sky. The space framed the memory of individuals who were victims of the Holocaust. Memories of personal accounts were gathered and hand written on translucent sheets of paper. We chose memories that were powerful and could also stand in for more than one individual. These were placed around the room at varying heights to stand in for the different individuals. Beneath each memory we placed an image of what the individual might have seen in their experience.
