RECENT TEACHING

2004     Spring Quarter

College of Creative Studies
Course:  Words in the Hand: Introduction to Letterpress Printing
A studio course introducing the student to letterpress printing. The page is analyzed as a system of space where text is arranged to create literal and metaphorical meaning. Folios, books and paper sculptural will be treated as pages that are divided, folded, turned and manipulated into structures for holding words. Here the artist will learn that letterpress printing provides a certain level of commitment for the words we choose to frame and fix within time and space.  A course reader, visits to the Arts Library and the Special Collections Library and a field trip are required components of the course

College
of Creative
Studies
Course: Projects: Artist’s book, Print and Text-Based Art Forms
Artists continue to contribute to the future of the book by exploring the book format and book related works in a broad diversity of forms and expressions.  This course is for students who are willing to dedicate the time and focus to create a substantial work. Each will operate independently while also acting as part of a team contributing thoughtful discussion to the projects of all participants.  Reading material, discussions, slide presentations and print and book making materials and techniques will be tailored to support the development of the participant’s projects.

2003    Fall Quarter

College
of Creative
Studies
Course:  The Altered Book as Hermeneutic
In the academic institution the visual artist has the unique role in which research becomes an opportunity to construct meaning in visualforms. To read is to interpret, yet that interpretation need not always be in the form of more words. We will examine the book as a cultural and symbolic object. The texts of the books and how we define meaning will result in the altered forms the books will take. These altered books will avoid clever and trite solutions, focusing instead on hermeneutics.  Each altered book in its sculptural form will serve as an interpretive model of the book’s meaning.
